There is a young man in my town.
He is a very beautiful man.
I sense we could become great friends.

Today I reached out to him.
I invited him to breathe deeply with me
so we could commune in a deep way.
He said he didn’t want to listen to what I had to say,
and I will respect his wish.
Never again will I utter another word to this man
unless he comes to say he’s changed his mind.

This is not a problem for me.
I love to be silent.
And I feel grateful for his honesty.
But afterwards I cried.
Oh yes, I cried very deeply.

Our unwillingness to listen to one another is a sad thing.
Maybe I don’t have anything to say
that’s worth listening to,
but what is the harm in accepting
an invitation to grow closer?
